Care & Maintenance Guide
Handcrafted by Second Life Gems

Each piece of Second Life Gems jewellery is made with natural and reclaimed timber, finished by hand, and designed to last. With proper care, your piece will age beautifully over time.

1. General Care
  • Store your jewellery in a dry, cool place away from sunlight, moisture, and heat sources.

  • Avoid wearing it in the shower, bath, pool, or ocean, as prolonged exposure to water may cause warping or damage to the wood.

  • Remove your piece during exercise, gardening, cleaning, or manual work to avoid knocks and scratches.

  • Keep your jewellery away from chemicals, including perfumes, lotions, hairsprays, and cleaning products, which may affect the finish.

2. Cleaning
  • Use a soft, dry cloth (microfibre or cotton) to gently wipe your jewellery after wear.

  • Do not soak, scrub, or use any cleaning liquids.

  • For more thorough cleaning, a lightly dampened cloth with plain water may be used, followed immediately by drying with a soft towel.

3. Timber Conditioning

Over time, natural timber may become dry or dull in appearance. To restore lustre:

  • Use a small amount of natural oil (such as linseed, tung, or beeswax-based wood balm) applied with a clean cloth.

  • Rub gently in the direction of the grain, allow it to absorb, then buff off any excess.

  • Do not use vegetable oils, as they may become sticky or rancid.

Conditioning is recommended every 6–12 months, or sooner if the piece appears dry.

4. Storage Tips
  • Store pieces individually to prevent scratching or tangling.

  • Keep in a jewellery box, pouch, or cloth-lined drawer.

  • Avoid exposure to extreme humidity or temperature changes, such as in bathrooms or near heaters.

5. Important Notes
  • As with all natural materials, wood may shift subtly over time. These changes are not flaws, but part of the organic nature of your piece.

  • We do not recommend resizing wooden rings, as the material cannot be safely altered once set.

6. Repair, Warranty & Support

We offer a 12-month warranty on all custom-made jewellery from the date of delivery. This warranty covers faults in materials or craftsmanship under normal wear conditions. It does not cover general wear and tear, accidental damage, exposure to water or chemicals, or improper storage.

If your custom piece is damaged or you believe it is faulty, please contact us as soon as possible at contact@secondlifegems.com with the following:

  • A description of the issue

  • Clear photographs showing the damage or fault

  • If your piece is outside the warranty period or the issue is not covered, we also offer a repair and care service for existing clients. Some repairs may incur a service fee. You will be advised of any costs before proceeding.

  • Return postage is the responsibility of the customer. If your item is being repaired or replaced under warranty, we will cover the cost of return shipping once the work is complete.
